Blog 10 :Confidence and Change Through Technology

Confidence and Presentation

We live in a fast changing technological world. Computers and associated software are deeply integrated within modern society and education.

Learner creativity together with technology is a perfect partnership.

One of the problems associated with learning (and in particular for those who are dyslexic) is time management. An electronic organiser together with an email reminder feature, such as what Google Mail offers can assist with keeping life on track.

A Google Account gives you access to email 24/7 from any Internet linked computer. Through Google Mail you also have access to Google Calendar. Once you learn how to set up your Google Calendar, you will be able to set up email or text reminders for your saved appointments. These reminders can be sent your email account; the emails can be received on both your personal computer and mobile phone,

You can set as many reminders as you need.

For example you could set a reminder 1 Month before an important event - followed by 1 week and then daily and if required hourly or minutes before your appointments or events.

The Google system can also save your contacts, and you can separate your emails in to colour coded files that suit you.

Google calendar will synchronise with your mobile and as a result, this could resolve a number of your time management problems. Furthermore you will be pleased to note that the Google service is free of charge.

If your mobile is not compatible, replace it with one that is as soon as you can afford to.

The computer is a communication and presentation tool. Most of today's learner's following on from initial guidance can confidently create letters, reports, documents and presentations. The learner can also store this information on the computer or memory stick.
In the past many learner's, (myself included) who have used digital devises as learning tools were made to feel (through peer pressure} that they had achieved through deception or cheating.

Thankfully education and society attitudes have since changed. Today the assessment of teaching and learning is achieved in a variety of imaginative and inclusive creative ways, everyone can now achieve. The following are examples of today's work and educationally accepted methods of collecting evidence, video, photographs, tape recording, blogs, web cam recordings and power point to name a few.

Today it is possible with a mobile phone to take quality pictures or videos. You can make or listen to voice recordings and books, receive and send emails which can include calendar updates. With today’s software it is possible to read and write a document. Most modern mobile phones also have excellent spell check, predicted text and memo software systems.

It is an ironic fact that most teachers demand that mobile phones are turned off. As they are either unaware or are challenged by this technology.
