Don't look for excuses
If you are able bodied and have no learning difficulties other than dyslexia, then you have a learning problem not a traumatic illness. You should seek effective solutions. Work to your strengths and find alternatives ways of strengthening your weak areas.
Modern educators today are aware and recognise learning barriers. Teachers today make allowances and differentiate when they are planning teaching and learning activities.
Without doubt we still have the odd dinosaur teaching in our classrooms. However these days they should be in the minority rather than the majority. If you know of such a teacher challenge them to change. In previous blogs I have outlined methods that can be adapted or used to compensate for a number of learning related issues. In blog 4 there is a template that has be used to good effect by a number of learner's to request learning support.
Dyslexia does not stop achievement.
Bright Solutions for Dyslexia (2009) suggest dyslexics have other gifts and talents such as - artistic, athletic, and mechanical gifts; 3-D visualization ability; musical talent; creative problem solving skills; and intuitive people skills.
I know of a school where those who have learning difficulties are issued and use both in and out of school, Lap Tops. I find this act hideous; the students may as well have a sign on their heads stating "bullies and thieves pick on me”.
As we are now living in a digital age, all students should be using lap tops. Which would leave all learners feeling that they had achieved on a level footing?
Find and develop solutions that allow you achieve through your strengths. There is no need to label your limitations.
