Blog 5 : My History Post School Years

Positive affirmations and behaviours create confidence.

I bounced back from school setbacks, when I was offered an apprenticeship with a civil engineering company.

One day a week I attended technical college. This was in fact was one long day a week, which included three hours of travel a six hour practical session and a three hour evening class.

I gained my city and guilds with distinction. (Not a bad effort for a lazy kid) The college encouraged me to stay and study at HND level. I was not confident and chose welding instead (Practical no Writing).

As I matured I devised a variety of methods to hide my inability to take in information. I created my own version of shorthand. My system replaced words with symbols it was an efficient method that I used make notes. Significantly I could confidently recite the notes as and when I required them. (I wish I had latched onto this earlier in my life)

Today many people use similar tactics when sending texts or emails. Many in today’s society despair and sneer at this practice (Educators in particular) however in certain circumstances these methods can restore normality into a disorientated mind; which is an obvious learning barrier.

Bright Solutions for Dyslexia (2009) suggest dyslexics have other gifts and talents such as - artistic, athletic, and mechanical gifts; 3-D visualization ability; musical talent; creative problem solving skills; and intuitive people skills.
