Blog 6 :Discovering Technology

During the mid 1980's I experienced two life changing events. The first was that I was beginning to understand and speak German. And the second was when I was being trained to use a relatively new piece of kit at that time, which was called a computer.

These two significant events would later open many windows of opportunity.

During this time there was an array of technical gadgets emerging into the world. I for sometime had been experimenting with a handheld electronic organizer (Which incidentally about the size of a breeze block) I used it to store information and make lists of equipment. Taking advantage of the device’s spell checker I found to my delight that I could also spell. “Eureka”.

Later I confidently transferred these skills to the computer.

Many young people discover technology through the Internet and computer games. Whilst discovering through play, the learner's are unknowingly preparing them selves for jobs in the future.

The military discovered that today's digitally aware individuals are capable of operating modern military technological equipment. The unmanned aircraft, and the people who control them, are an excellent example of how digital play skills transfer to this type of employment. Such aircraft and operators have been successfully deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The equipment provides reconnaissance imagery and other intelligence information for the services engaged in combat and humanitarian duties.

Technology can also be a solution to a number of dyslexia related learning barriers.

More on this subject later.
