Learning barriers
There are many barriers to learning and dyslexia is only one of them. As teachers and parents we need to be mindful that we, or some other significant figure in a learner's life could also be a learning barrier.
Respect is a two way street.
Many teachers, lecturers, trainers, coaches and some parents often demand respect.
Today's young people are digital natives in other words they have been surrounded by technology from the moment they arrived in this world. As adults we often fail to recognise or appreciate the level of a young learner's digital awareness and knowledge.
We could all learn lessons from our students. It does no harm to let the student teach a subject in which they clearly have more experience. I have found that this technique is not only rewarding for both parties, it also affords the tutor a valuable insight of the Learner knowledge and methodology.
There are some trainers, teachers and lecturers who believe that they can simply read a syllabus or specification and teach the subject.
In reality this is simply a transfer of knowledge from one vessel to another.
Today's digitally aware young people, demand more, they want to know how and why.
As today's young people are the digital natives. We need to consider that Google and Wicipedia would be suffice as a suppler of transfer knowledge, via video, pod cast, tape recording, ebook or a tv/radio programme.
