Some readers will be aware that I am a both a student and a teacher.
Let me explain this strange combination I have been involved in training and instructing for nearly twenty years.
I have enjoyed successful employment. I have enjoyed watching those who have benefited from my teaching and guidance, confidently step out into the big wide world and exceed all expectations.
Because of my dyslexia I never thought I would have the confidence to train and work as a full time teacher. I was concerned about my writing and spelling. I had worked for several FE colleges as a casual lecturer. I mainly worked with young people who as part of an academic course, were required to participate in a number of outdoor pursuit type activities. Occasionally I would cover academic lessons for absent tutors; the more classroom exposure I got, the more my confidence improved.
Utilising the computer and Smart Board Systems dyslexia became a side issue.
A couple of summers ago a lecturer ("Sue if ever you read this you are forgiven") at a college where I was working part time, convinced me that I should apply for a full time teaching post. I applied and after an exhaustive process I was offered a job on the proviso that I attended teacher training.
I dreaded the day that that teacher training would start. Unexpectedly during the time I have attended teacher training. I have received nothing but positive feedback and guidance.
Teaching and learning has changed so much.
Teacher training empowered me to share with you my struggles, solutions and aspirations.
I hope that this in turn inspires you to strive and seek your own positives that are hidden within dyslexia.
